Seongnam Arts Center, a space where culture and arts come alive!

Seongnam Arts Center was inaugurated on Oct. 14th 2005, drawing a great deal of attention from the community of culture and arts. Though it has a short history, Seongnam Arts Center has grown into a place where all citizens can feel the breath of culture and enjoy art, where they are inspired by cultural experience and participate in cultural activities.

Boasting one of the best facilities and scale in Korea, Seongnam Arts Center is a complex cultural space and the leader of performing arts. Seongnam Arts Center has moved the audience with premieres and exclusive performances, and every single show put up by Seongnam Arts Center is said to have upgraded the quality of performing arts in Korea.

Ivan Fischer (conductor of the Budapest Festival Orchestra)
“It was such a precious experience for me to meet the wonderful audience in this beautiful Seongnam Arts Center.”

Seongnam Arts Center is the trend-setter of performing arts which moves the audience with a wide spectrum of exclusive shows from symphony to opera, and helps to ventilate the artistic potential of Korean musicians by providing them with the best stage.

Seongnam Arts Center is rich in nature. Located in Bundang, Seongnam, which is close to Seoul, it serves as place of culture and arts, which breathes together with the local community and provides a resting place where citizens can feel the fragrance of arts in harmony with the nature.

Seongnam Arts Center offers an open cultural space where anyone who loves arts is can demonstrate his/her passion. The Square of Dance, an outdoor theater, and the Staircase of Light leading to the front of the Concert Hall turn themselves into a stage and an auditorium each whenever performances are put up outside. In the midst of the nature, boundary becomes blurry between the stage and the auditorium and the audience can enjoy art at a closer distance.

The Operate House, a multi-purpose cultural center encompassing tradition, modern art and avant-garde art, has 1,804 seats and state-of-the-art facilities catching up with the trend of artistic performances which are growing greater in both scale and sophistication. The Opera House boasts the latest sound system, lighting console, ultra-large imaging projector and an automatic sliding stage to feature large projects. Its open ceiling has acoustical cloud and banner curtains which are designed to vividly deliver even the smallest possible sound.

The back stage offers convenience facilities to perfection, such as practice rooms and make-up rooms for performers.

Gilbert Kaplan Conductor, (Specialist in Mahler)
“During the performance, I felt there was good harmony and feelings among the musicians. Responses from the audience and the sound system of the theater were also good.”

  Sumi Jo (soprano)
“I am so happy to be here in this important and beautiful place of culture and I hope the Center will grow further in the future…”

Renowned maestros were impressed by the Opera House where the audience can vividly feel the vibration and reverberation from the gestures and sound of performers on the stage. It is a space of composite art flowing along the stage.

The Concert Hall was designed in the form of a piano, built exclusively for concerts. The arena-type Concert Hall, with 994 seats, was constructed with a focus on the accurate delivery of sound so that natural sound is delivered vividly. Various stage equipment and indirect illumination relaxing the audience add to the beauty of concerts.

  Anne Sofie von Otter (mezzo-sprano)
“There is a beautiful concert hall here in Seongnam Arts Center. I am positive our show will go successful in this Concert Hall just as Seongnam Arts Center has been.”

A world of diverse sounds is unfolded in the Concert Hall where musicians from home and abroad make the most of their abilities. It’s a place where the audience can feel subtle vibrations and reverberations and even the breath of musicians.

The Ensemble Theater is a place for experimental shows. It’s a small theater with 398 seats but is equipped with state-of-the-art stage mechanism which enables stage producers to set up the stage in a variety of style. Here, the audience can feel the excitement and sweat of performers on the same wavelength. It is the stage of ambitious dreams where you can experience a variety of experimental genres.

Seongnam Arts Center has a multi-purpose gallery rich in both popularity and artistry. It is an open, cultural space where you do not just look and pass by, but communicate with artworks face to face and engage yourself in culture. Seongnam Arts Center nurtures the culture of engagement, not of distant looking. The Center operates the culture and art academy which offers various courses including painting, music and dance in order to let local residents enjoy cultural experience. There, not only adults but also children can have easy access to culture and learn art.

Around the Center are a set of facilities where visitors can relax and enjoy culture, such as the play room for preschoolers (so that their parents can enjoy shows in comfor), coffee houses and restaurants. As such, the Center is beloved by people, especially family visitors, as a resting place in the middle of the city.

Kurt Masur (Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra)
“I believe this wonderful Seongnam Arts Center will enhance the quality of life for people in the city and bring peace to their minds.”

Su-Jin Kang (Prima ballerina of Stuttgart Ballet)
“I hope Seongnam Arts Center will grow into the best theater in the world.”

Myoung-Hoon Cheong (Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra)
“I used to perform classical music mostly in Seoul. Now that we have such a wonderful Seongnam Arts Center here in Seongnam, I believe it will make great contributions to the development of the whole nation, let alone Seoul.”
  • As a high-tech multi-purpose art center that presents world-class shows and a friendly cultural place for families, Seongnam Arts Center will stand strong as the leader of culture and art around the world. It has presented a number of programs which surpassed the expectation of the performing art community in Korea, such as Gilbert Kaplan’s premiere in Korea, Ivan Fischer & the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Matthias Goerne’s first recital, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo (Cinderella and La Belle), Christian Thielemann & the Munich Philharmonic and the premiere of Miss Saigon (one of top four musicals in the world). It has received rave reviews for unique and perfect-quality performances including the youth orchestra festival, and its own produced “Faust” and “Ariadne auf Naxos” were named as the best performance of the year by KBS TV in 2005 and 2007 each.
  • In addition, the Center has organized the Tancheon Festival, which is a culture and art festival for citizens, the Seongnam International Dance Festival and the Seongnam International Youth Orchestra Festival that teaches youths music for emotional education, thereby making significant contributions to the development of local culture.
